The equity and commodity markets were broadly lower this week with losses across the board. It is tough to pin the declines on any one thing. Certainly the selling in the commodity markets unnerved investors as it might signal a global slump and a renewal of the deflation fears. And while earnings growth has been decent, sales are coming in soft. For the week the S&P gave up -2.2% while small-cap stocks were off -3.2%....

How quickly things can change. Only a week ago stock markets around the world sagged under the weight of a possible Greek default and exit from the eurozone. The referendum, a rejection of Europe’s bailout offer, the finance minster riding into the sunset on his bike. All very captivating and gloomy. But no sooner than it looked like the worst case scenario was unfolding, the script changed....

It was a generally positive week for domestic equities, but we saw some notable declines overseas. For the week the S&P gained +0.8% while small-cap equities closed at new highs, up +1.6% for the week. While the situation in Greece was displayed prominently across the headlines, the risk of Greek default/euro exit didn’t appear to bother U.S. equities much. ...
